Max (Science Sunday)

We have added another member to our school family. Max is his? name, he is a dwarf rabbit. Max has been with us for about a month and the kids can't get enough of him. Max has taught the children quite a few things. For one they have been more gentle and observant of their body movements, and if I knew that a bunny could change the inside voice levels overnight he would have been brought home a long time ago.

Max gets a lot of attention from Lil. Here Lil is working with the Parts of a rabbit cards.

Lil talks to Max everytime she chooses a work off the shelf.

Here are some facts about rabbits.
  • Rabbits can live as long as 10 years.
  • Rabbits can run up to 35 miles.
  • The ears of a rabbit can turn in any direction.
  • Rabbits have two powerful hind legs that only move together at the same time.
  • A rabbit twitches its nose if it is curious or scared ( when the children learned about this, their voice levels changed drastically to a normal inside voice and they have kept this level).
  • Rabbits have 28 teeth that are always growing.

Making Bookmarks

DJ and Ken coloring bookmarks for their classmates to show that they are thankful for their friendship. What I particularly loved about this work was their high level of concentration and witnessing how far they have come with their coloring skills. It seems like it was just yesterday when they were "scribbling".

Watching Grass Grow

During our  farm lessons we planted some grass seeds. The children enjoyed observing the grass growing everyday. N showed a strong interest in this activity and took on the responsibility of making sure they were getting watered.

Pilgrims/ North America

We have been learning about the life of the Pilgrims and the First Thanksgiving. The children were very surprised to learn that the Pilgrim children did not go to school, instead they helped the adults with the chores. We been reading the book Pilgrims of Plymouth by Susan Goodman. I love everything about this book, the pictures are awesome and the language is just right for preschoolers.

                                                           Here is the cover.

After reading the books they did some weaving just like Pilgrim children would do when helping the family. They created wallets by cutting the strips then weaving the paper through the precuts mats. They folded it to make the wallet, then I stapled it closed for them.

                                               Cutting the paper strips.

Cutting money to put in their wallets!!

During DJ's afterschooling time he has been independently working with the North America map puzzle. DJ created his own map . I don't have pictures of him tracing the puzzle pieces, but here is pictures of everything else he accomplished.
Painting the countries of North America

Using the label maker to make the labels for the names of the countries.

Labeling the names of the countries on his map.
