Addy Learns A Lesson 1864: A Book Review by Ken
Addy Learns A Lesson is the second book in the Addy collection of the American Girl series. It is a fiction book based on facts. This story takes place in Philadelphia. Addy is a courageous, smart girl growing up during the civil war. The story begins with Addy and her mother finally making it to Philadelphia from a dangerous escape from slavery. The story shares how Addy meets a new friend named Sarah who helps Addy find her way around the city. Sarah is very nice and helps Addy learn how to read the street signs. Since Addy and her mother are newly freed slaves they don't know how to read. While in Philadelphia Addy mom finds a job working as a seamstress and delivers the packages to the customer. Mrs. Moore finds tham an apartment to live. Addy goes to school for the first time and meets a girl name Harriet that has everything Addy dreamed freedom would be. Addy tries everything to be Harriets' friend even if it hurts her friend Sarah. Towards the end of the story Addy begins to read and starts teaching her mother to read who is having a hard time finding her way in the city because she can't read the street signs. Addys' class has a spelling bee and this is when Addy learns her lesson. I don't want to tell the rest because I would highly recommend you to read this book for yourself. The author recommends children between the ages of 8-12. What I liked most about this book is it teaches a great lesson about friendship and the importance of perserverance. The only thing I didn't like about the book is that it wasn't longer. It left me wondering if Addys' mother ever learned to read or write. Luckily for me I have the next book in this collection called Addys' Surprise, that I am about to read as soon as I am done with this review. Some activities you can do during or after the book is make maps, or have a spelling bee contest like I did with my little brother and friend.
I hope you enjoyed this book review and seriously consider reading this great book.
